Congo boats capsize, 270 dead, missing

Seventy people have died and 200 others are missing as two boats capsize in separate incidents on Congo's vast rivers over the weekend, reports say.

Early Saturday, a boat on a river in northwest Equateur province hit a rock and capsized, The Associated Press quoted provincial spokeswoman, Ebale Engumba, as saying on Sunday. She said more than 70 people are believed dead among 100 estimated passengers.

German air shows kill 2, injure dozens

Two separate air show incidents in southern Germany have killed two people and injured dozens of people, police said.

A small propeller-driven plane's pilot lost control of his aircraft while taking off at the air show in north of the Bavarian city of Nuremberg on Sunday and crashed into a group of spectators, killing a 46-year-old woman, police said.

Turkish plane makes emergency landing

A Turkish Airlines (THY) passenger plane has made an emergency landing at Ataturk International Airport in Turkey's capital, Istanbul, after it suffered a bird hit.

An Antalya-bound THY flight with 116 passengers on board had a close shave on Sunday when it hit a flock of birds a few minutes into the flight. A bird flew into one of the plane's engines and grounded the Airbus A320 plane, CNN Turk reported.

LAX briefly shut down 3 terminals

The Los Angeles International Airport has shut down three of its terminals briefly after an airport contractor abandoned his post at a security zone exit.

On Saturday, around 4:30 a.m. local time (1130 GMT), an officer noticed that an exit from one of the terminals was unguarded, Transportation Security Administration spokesperson Jon Allen said.

Plane crash kills nine in New Zealand

At least nine people have been killed after a light aircraft belonging to a skydiving company burst into flames and crashed on New Zealand's South Island.

The plane went down near the airstrip at Fox Glacier, a central attraction in the UNESCO-designated World Heritage area.

Two feared dead in Dubai plane crash

A cargo plane has crashed near a busy highway in Dubai, setting some cars on fire and sending a column of smoke into the sky.

The aircraft belongs to the US courier United Parcel Services (UPS). It came down near the busy Emirates Road on Friday while trying to land at Dubai International Airport, AFP reported a civil aviation official as saying.

Drug war threatens Mexico tourism

At least eight people have been killed in a fire bomb attack on a bar in the Mexican tourist town of Cancun. Local reports said the attack was carried out by a drug cartel which was trying to extort protection money from the bar owner. It has heightened fears that drug-related violence is spreading to tourist towns. Al Jazeera's Franc Contreras reports from Cancun.

Ecuador bus crash kills 42, injures 12

A bus going through Ecuador's highlands towards the capital Quito went off the cliff before dawn Sunday, killing 42 passengers and injuring 12.

The crash happened in the central province of Cotopaxi where rescue workers are struggling to extract bodies and look for survivors on the steep cliffs around area of La Delicia, about 55 miles (95 kilometers) south of Quito.

'Russia tugboat sinks with crew'

A Russian vessel with 14 crewmembers on board has sunk around the country's Arctic region after sending a distress call, officials say.

Rescuers discovered a life raft from Russia's Alexei Kulakovsky tugboat, which sank on early Friday morning in the Laptev Sea some 20 nautical miles (more than 30 km) from the shore, RIA Novosti reported.

Two fighter jets collide in Greece

Greece's Defense Ministry has announced that two Greek fighter jets have collided in mid-air in the south of the island of Crete.

The ministry said the two F-16 planes, with a total of three crew members on board, were part of a four-plane team that were on a training mission out of Souda airforce bay in the island's northwest on Thursday.
