Defiant France ups Roma crackdown

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his closest aides are defiantly increasing the expelling of Roma immigrants despite protests at home and abroad.

France's Immigration and Integration Minister Eric Besson now wants to expand the list of infractions for which the Roma Gypsy minority can be forcibly expelled from France, in spite of criticism at home and abroad, Time magazine reported on Wednesday.

Berlusconi's party losing ground: Poll

A new opinion poll in Italy shows on that the public support for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right party continues to slide after the premier's split with former ally Gianfranco Fini.

The survey conducted by The International Study of Peace/Conflict Resolution Organizations last week and published in the Corriere della Sera newspaper shows Berlusconi's People of Freedom party would get 29.7 percent of the vote if elections were held now, down two points from July, Reuters reported.

Judiciary chief dismisses Iran sanctions

Iran's Judiciary chief says the mass demonstrations held on Quds Day prove that the Iranian nation can rise to any challenge, including Western sanctions.

Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani said Sunday that the Quds Day demonstrations sent a clear message to the "enemies of Islam" that they can “never realize their evil objectives in Iran or the Muslim world.”

Basque group ETA declares ceasefire

Basque separatist group ETA, which is blamed for hundreds of deaths in its long fight for independence, has vowed "not to carry out armed actions" anymore.

In a video statement published on Sunday by the Gara website, which typically publishes information from the group, ETA "calls on the Spanish government to implement the minimum democratic solutions toward a peace process."

Reports say top Tories in London have not consulted or even communicated with their fellow camp members in Scotland and have kept them out of their top level strategy and policy meetings since May.

New appeal lodged on Kelly's death

A group of doctors are to formally ask the attorney general Dominic Grieve for his permission to hold an inquest into the death of the former UN weapons inspector David Kelly.

The group of five doctors will hand in the related legal papers to the attorney general by the end of next week and will refer to the high court if they cannot secure his authorization.
